The Soap Factory Presents: R.U.R.

forsoapfactory

R.U.R. is a group exhibition of nine artists delving into what craft means in the age of mechanical reproduction.

The exhibition’s title, R.U.R., comes from Rossum’s Universal Robots, the 1921 Czech play by Karel Capek, which first coined the word ‘robot.’ Rossum’s Universal Robots gave life to the artificial man, the tireless worker who eventually became rebellious and worked to overthrow their masters.

Like the ‘robots’ in Rossum’s Universal Robots, the works in this exhibition will question the manufacture of human identity inherent in work, and seek to understand if the construction of identity in humans is as artificial like that of the ‘robot.’

The participating nine artists are: Isabelle Hayeur, Colin Lyons, Nadine Anderson, Kimberly Greene, Judith Hoffman, Amy Ritter, Katie Murken, Pritika Chowdhry and Dustin Yager.

Opening reception: March 2, 2013, 7:00-11:00 PM

Exhibition Runs: March 2 – April 21, 2013
