Bae Tigre is a new addition to the Minneapolis based artist collective Polkadot Mayhem. The collective is a group of musicians comprised of the hip-hop artist Botzy, Wesley Opus, The Once-ler and the band Jellyfish Brigade. Bae Tigre’s sound is a departure for the very prolific collective and showcases quite a different genre. Ranelle Johnson is the creator of Bae Tigre and with nearly a decade of band experience (Tiger VS) for the first time has gone solo. She is also Polkadot Mayhem’s first solo female artist. Ranelle started the project with recording and producing the album in her basement then bringing it to Wesley Opus who mixed it. She handles the vocals and keys live and performs with the unusual line up of live drums, electric cello, and viola. The album is the happy marriage of the electronic and symphonic. Continue reading

89.3 The Current had a ten-year Birthday party at the Turf Club on January 19th, radio personality Mary Lucia hosted the special occasion. Lucia had the privilege to pick the talent and it reflected her musical taste. You might not want to rock with local bands, and you might dislike the idea of an 1980’s icon headlining the Current’s tenth Birthday bash. That is totally fine but it was a great show. A show that sold out in five minutes, and even at the last moment people were scheming to attend. A beautiful night that was warm outside and inside, palpable with the anticipation of seeing Billy Idol. Continue reading

New Release – more.is.more – Roy G Black

a1823430155_10

It’s nice to see music that stretches our aural sensibilities. Nothing fancy, just straightforward analog recording with no overdubs. For the lay person out there, no overdubs mean no layering of instruments over the  top of on another.  Just hit record and play the piece.

What comes out of it, is a full sounding unique experimental rock sound. They describe themselves as Bombastic and Post-Rock, but it goes a bit deeper than that. It’s a great experiment in sound and arrangement. Check out their Bandcamp page where you can pre-order the new 10″ and t-shirt combo. Part of the proceeds goes toward a great cause as well as supporting local music.
