Its been labeled “perky”, “petite”, “upbeat”…Oh wait, to what am I referring? Could it be the small, but full of heart instrument the ukulele or the organizer of the third annual Uke-Fest Katy Vernon? Both actually, for the third year she will partner with fellow ukulele artists to raise funds for Arc GTC (Greater Twin Cities).

Two women, best friends, one show…one helluva show! Lizzo and Caroline Smith have each had a banner year, both reaching new heights of skill and success. Friday night at First Avenue’s Mainroom in Minneapolis they showed off what they are made of.

NEMAA Fine Arts Show – Now through 10/5

Presented by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA), the Fall Fine Arts Show is an annual exhibition of more than 150 of NEMAA’s members’ artwork. It’s a great opportunity to view a vast collection of quality and diverse artwork, including painting, photography, sculpture, mixed-media art, and much more — all for sale in one location.

Free parking is available on-street, in the parking lot next to the building, and in the parking lot on the corner of Quincy and Broadway.

Seven bands carefully chosen by Minnesota’s own Trampled by Turtles outperformed the violent thunderstorm that threatened, but failed, to cancel Saturday’s Festival Palomino.

Album Review ‘Pangaea’ Toki Wright and Big Cats

‘Pangaea’ refers to the theory of the supercontinent that over time separated into several, a journey of crossing peoples and cultures. Today’s culture is blurring at the edges at hyper speed, but not without growing pains. “Much like the continents, people have spread out across the Earth but are all connected.” Minneapolis native Toki Wright has been a voice of social consciousness and action since the early 2000’s, working with local North Minneapolis youth organizations in particular and traveling as an Arts Ambassador to Sierra Leone in 2013. A man of numerous collaborations including releases with Rhymesayers Entertainment, he is not one to sit on an idea. ‘Pangaea’ is the first album to be independently released through Soul Tools, and its eighteen-month birthing proves that some things should not be rushed.
